The tour starts with a 15 minute land lesson where our guests will learn basic safety and paddling techniques. Following the land lesson, students and their guide will head into the water and begin paddling towards Black Rock. Participants often encounter an abundance of green sea turtles and tropical fish. Pu'u Keka'a, or Black Rock as it was known in ancient Hawaii is the most prominent natural feature in Kaanapali and the number one snorkel destination in Hawaii. This wonder of nature was created by a giant lava flow that entered the sea hundreds of years ago. Participants will also experience spectacular views of the West Maui Mountains and the islands of Lanai and Molokai from a most unique offshore perspective. The tour will first explore the iconic back side of Black Rock, famous for its 60’ sea cliffs and only visible from the ocean. There, our knowledgeable guides will give a talk about ancient Hawaiian history and local folklore as well as the marine wildlife participants may encounter. Next, the guides will lead the tour around the front side of Black Rock and anchor approximately 20’ off the center of the snorkel area. The group will then have 25-30 minutes of prime Black Rock Snorkeling. Once the snorkeling is complete, everyone will paddle back to complete the tour. The total distance paddled at the end of the tour is a comfortable 1.4 miles.
