The Refuge of Kings: The Rugged Backcountry of North Kohala, with its impenetrable forests and precipitous valleys, has served as a refuge and battleground for centuries. Powerful chiefs battling to control the island would time and again find themselves stymied by the treacherous terrain as they sought to defeat rebels who had escaped to the deep canyons. Before achieving what no other had achieved before him – conquering and uniting all the islands – even “Kamehameha the Great” sought protection here. Kohala UTV Adventure offers you a rare glimpse of this pristine Hawaiian landscape, and of the history and legends they have inspired. Join us on a guided UTV tour along the rim of the northern-most of Kohala’s seven valleys: the Valley of the Long Spear, Pololu. Safely seated in your nimble 5-seat off-road “utility task vehicle” (UTV), we will meander makai (towards the sea) through the lush pastures of a working cattle ranch before journeying mauka (towards the mountains) where cool mists, verdant forests, and rushing streams await. Leisurely paced, educational, fascinating and fun, this UTV tour is the perfect Hawaiian eco-activity for families and groups. Come ride with us for an unforgettably unique Hawaiian experience!

- Meet with the MC&A Inc. representative at the hotel's front entrance.
- Depart Mauna Lani: 11:45 a.m.
- Check-in: 12:15 p.m.
- Tour Duration: 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (2.5-hours)
- Return to Mauna Lani: 3:30 p.m.
- What to Bring & Wear: You will get wet…and muddy. Or dusty. Or not. Just depends on the weather.
- Wear clothing that can get wet, muddy, or dusty. Long pants are preferable, but shorts will work fine.
- Wear comfortable, water tolerant walking shoes or boots (absolutely NO slippers or flip flops) as there will be some walking, possibly in muddy, uneven terrain.
- Bring a towel and a change of clothing.
- A light jacket is highly recommended.
- Guide, head sock, helmet, goggles, gloves, rain poncho (for rainy days)
- Light snack (upon returning to headquarters)

- Transportation is not included; check-in location is within walking distance of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel.
- Guide gratuity is not included and is at the sole discretion and expense of the participant.
- Due to COVID-19, certain inclusions, meal options and capacities may be changed to adhere to local mandates, and current safety & health guidelines.
- Rated: Easy (short level hikes, leisurely UTV tour ride) Must be able to walk over uneven ground and sit for at least one hour in an upright position. This UTV tour is not for those with back or neck problems, expectant mothers, or those fearful of nature, trees, and learning, getting wet and/or muddy, or good fun.
- All DRIVERS must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be at least 8 years old to participate.
- Cancellation made after September 2, 2021 is subject to a full charge and will be non-refundable.
- Cancellation of trip due to inclement weather is at the sole discretion of the vendor.
