Kohala’s rugged backcountry and rich heritage are yours to explore with Kohala UTV Adventure! The Refuge of Kings: The Rugged Backcountry of North Kohala, with its impenetrable forests and precipitous valleys, has served as a refuge and battleground for centuries. Powerful chiefs battling to control the island would time and again find themselves stymied by the treacherous terrain as they sought to defeat rebels who had escaped to the deep canyons.
Kohala UTV Adventure offers you a rare glimpse of this pristine Hawaiian landscape, and of the history and legends they have inspired. Join us on a guided UTV tour along the rim of the northern-most of Kohala’s seven valleys, Pololu, the Valley of the Long Spear. Safely seated in your nimble 5-seat off-road “utility task vehicle” (UTV), we will meander makai (towards the sea) through the lush pastures of a working cattle ranch before journeying mauka (towards the mountains) where cool mists, verdant forests, and rushing streams await.
Timing:
- Meet with the MC&A Activity Staff at the LOWER LOBBY.
- Depart hotel: 7:15 a.m.
- Check-in: 8:15 a.m.
- Activity: 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
- Return to hotel: 12:00 p.m.
- Depending on the weather you might get dusty, wet, and/or muddy.
- Long pants are preferable.
- Wear comfortable, water tolerant walking shoes or boots (absolutely NO slippers or flip flops).
- Bring a towel and a change of clothing. A light jacket is highly recommended.
- Roundtrip transportation
- Guide, head sock, helmet, goggles, gloves, rain poncho (for rainy days)

- Must be able to walk over uneven ground and sit for at least one hour in an upright position.
- This UTV tour is not for those with back or neck problems or expectant mothers.
- All DRIVERS must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
- ALL PARTICIPANTS need to provide their height and weight to participate.
- Participants may be required to sign a release and waiver of liability prior to taking the tour.
- There will be no refund for cancellations made on or after Monday, January 5, 2026.

- Cancellation of trip due to inclement weather is at the sole discretion of the vendor.
- This activity requires a minimum participant count to operate. Should the required minimum not be met, the tour will be cancelled and refunded without penalty.
